Alnwick Gardens – Christmas Events in Northumberland
As Jack Frost takes his icy grip on all things green and floral, a garden wouldn’t be the most obvious place to visit in Winter but the Alnwick Gardens in Northumberland are just one of a few exceptions. The stunning colour displays of Summer and Autumn may have faded but they have been replaced by a festive display not to be missed.
A fabulous Best Intent Marquee has been decked out and filled with wonderful traders offering everything from unique gifts, stock fillers and artisan food producers.
You can keep the children out of mischief with a visit to Santa and his cheeky elves in the grotto or join in with one of their crafting workshops including making reindeer food and writing a letter to Father Christmas. Burn some energy and take a spin on the ice skating rink described as “the most picturesque spot in the North East for skating”. Take part in the Christmas trial – The elves have made a trail card to send you on a magical journey. Could you be the one to solve the clues and receive a prize?
If you are more of a foodie, visit The Treehouse Restaurant with its wobbly rope bridges, wooden walkways, twinkling lights and roaring log fire providing a magical Christmas dining experience. The tempting menu includes Northumbrian Game Terrine with Brioche, spiced apple and pickled turnips, Duo of Beef Roasted onion served with chestnut mushrooms and horseradish and a surely popular pudding of Sticky Toffee Pudding Bourbon with soaked raisin, sour cream and butterscotch. At dusk The Garden is transformed by the spectacular ‘Sparkle’ illumination, lighting the icy arbours and cascade.
The annual Grand Lantern Parade captures the true spirit of Christmas. Led by ‘Spark’ (an illuminated band), the procession will make its way through the outskirts of The Garden and under Bondgate Tower straight into the heart of Alnwick town finishing the parade with a grand finale of light and music in the Market Square.
